TRAFFIC ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS WEBINAR SERIES

The Traffic Engineering Fundamentals Webinar Series is a twelve-hour webinar for engineering and planning professionals and technicians who regularly interface with traffic engineering or are new to the discipline. The course is intended to introduce and overview several traffic engineering topics with some practical application for each. Congestion, safety and analysis are covered, including information on signals, crashes and studies, with workshops using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). The sessions are presented in four three-hour segments as organized below and are designed to offer lectures, workshops and computer demonstrations for an introduction to various topics. Videos and slide presentations are used to provide supplemental and background information.

Control and Studies: Traffic congestion overview of issues with historical data and mitigation techniques for several. Volume, speed and delay study basics of data collection and analysis of these fundamental study processes.
July 24 (2:00-3:30 ET)

MUTCD and Warrants,: Traffic control device review of the MUTCD for signs, markings and signals including warrant analysis. Signal warrants instruction on the MUTCD process for performing a traffic signal warrant study and analysis.
July 24 (3:30-5:00 ET)

Signals and Timing: Signal operations description of terms, equipment, function, operations of actuated and coordinated signals. Signal timing overview of parameters and procedures for coordination within signal systems.
July 25 (2:00-3:30 ET)

Safety and Drivers: Standard data collection and aggregation processes including condition and collision diagram forms. Overview of special circumstances for younger and older drivers to illustrate mitigation strategies.
July 25 (3:30-5:00 ET)

HSM and Urban CPM: Highway Safety Manual overview of development, purpose, organization and application for crash prediction. Urban Intersection Crash Prediction Model procedure for estimating crash rates following the HSM urban method.
July 26 (2:00-3:30 ET)

HCM and Intersections: Review of fundamental Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) and Level of Service (LOS) concepts underlying methodologies. HCM6 and HCS7 process for analyzing TWSC, AWSC & Roundabout intersections.
July 26 (3:30-5:00 ET)

Signals Analysis: HCM6 and HCS7 procedure for analyzing signalized intersections, including flow rate, saturation flow rate, capacity, delay, level of service, multiple-period analysis, phase duration and queuing.
July 27 (2:00-3:30 ET)

Streets and TIA: HCM6 and HCS7 procedure for analyzing signalized arterials including flow profile and access points. Traffic Impact Analysis overview of the process and definition of a project to illustrate the practical application.
July 27 (3:30-5:00 ET)
